Does insurance cover weight loss medicine?
Some commercial plans cover Wegovy, Zepbound and the GLP-1 pills for weight loss, and some do not. Many plans that do cover them require prior authorization, which means your doctor sends records showing you meet the plan rules, such as your BMI and related conditions.
If you have type 2 diabetes, medicines like Ozempic and Mounjaro are more often covered for diabetes care.
Medicare and Medicaid in 2026
Under federal agreements announced in November 2025, Medicare began adding coverage of some GLP-1 medicines for certain patients with obesity and related health conditions in 2026, with a copay of about 50 dollars a month for those who qualify. Details are still rolling out and depend on your plan. Illinois Medicaid rules can also change, so we check your coverage.
Self-pay options
Drug makers now sell some medicines directly to patients at lower cash prices, including through LillyDirect, NovoCare and the federal TrumpRx site. Starting doses of the GLP-1 pills have been offered for about 149 dollars a month. Weekly injections usually cost a few hundred dollars a month, and higher doses can cost more. Prices change often, so check the current price before you start.
We review your coverage, complete prior authorizations when needed and help you compare insurance and self-pay options so cost does not stop you from getting care.
Beware of very low prices
Very cheap products sold online are often compounded or from unknown sources. The FDA has warned about fake and compounded GLP-1 products and dosing errors. Choose an FDA-approved medicine from a licensed pharmacy.
