What is a CGM?

A CGM is a small sensor worn on the arm or belly. It measures sugar in the fluid under your skin and sends readings to your phone or a reader. You see trends and get alerts for highs and lows. Popular systems include Dexcom and FreeStyle Libre.

Who benefits from a CGM?

  • Everyone with type 1 diabetes
  • People with type 2 diabetes who use insulin
  • People with frequent or silent low blood sugar
  • Many people with type 2 diabetes who want to see how food and activity affect their sugar

Time in range

Time in range is the percent of the day your glucose stays between 70 and 180 mg/dL. Many adults aim for more than 70 percent of the day in range. We review your reports at each visit and turn them into simple changes.

Over-the-counter CGMs

Some CGMs, such as Dexcom Stelo and Abbott Lingo, can now be bought without a prescription. They are designed for people who do not use insulin. A prescription CGM is usually better if you take insulin.
