What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. The immune system destroys the cells that make insulin, so the body makes little or none. It can start at any age. Some adults have a slower form called LADA that is first mistaken for type 2.
Type 1 diabetes treatment
- Basal and mealtime insulin by pen or pump
- Carbohydrate counting and insulin-to-carb ratios
- Continuous glucose monitors with alerts for highs and lows
- Automated insulin delivery systems that adjust insulin based on CGM readings
- Plans for exercise, travel, illness and alcohol
- Screening for thyroid and celiac disease, which are more common with type 1
Preventing low blood sugar
Low blood sugar is the biggest day-to-day risk with insulin. We review your CGM data, adjust doses and make sure you have glucagon at home. Newer glucagon forms include a nasal spray and ready-to-use pens.
