What is PCOS?
PCOS is a common hormone condition in women. It is diagnosed when at least two of these are present: irregular or missed periods, signs of high androgens such as excess hair growth or acne, and polycystic ovaries or high AMH. Other causes must be ruled out first.
PCOS symptoms
- Irregular, heavy or missed periods
- Weight gain, often around the belly
- Excess hair on the face or body
- Acne and oily skin
- Thinning scalp hair
- Trouble getting pregnant
- Dark, velvety skin patches
PCOS treatment
- Healthy eating and activity, which improve insulin resistance
- Metformin for insulin resistance and prediabetes
- Birth control pills to regulate periods and reduce acne and hair growth
- Spironolactone for hair growth and acne, with reliable birth control
- GLP-1 weight loss medicines for women with obesity who are not planning pregnancy
- Referral for fertility care when you are ready
