Hormone problems that can cause weight gain
- Hypothyroidism: an underactive thyroid slows metabolism and can add a few pounds, mostly from fluid. See hypothyroidism care.
- Insulin resistance and prediabetes: high insulin levels make it easier to store fat, especially around the belly.
- PCOS: common in women, linked to insulin resistance, irregular periods and weight gain. See PCOS treatment.
- Menopause: falling estrogen shifts fat to the belly.
- Low testosterone in men: linked with more body fat and less muscle.
- Cushing's syndrome: too much cortisol, rare but important not to miss.
- Medicines: steroids, some antidepressants, diabetes medicines and others can cause weight gain.
How we find the cause
Your visit includes a detailed history and exam, then lab tests chosen for you. These may include thyroid tests, A1C and fasting insulin markers, cholesterol and, when symptoms point that way, sex hormones or cortisol testing.
Treatment that targets the root cause
Treating the hormone problem helps, but most people also need a weight plan. That may include a GLP-1 or other weight loss medicine, nutrition changes and strength training. Because Dr. Siddiqui treats both the hormones and the weight, your care stays in one place.
