What is Hashimoto's disease?
Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition. The immune system slowly damages the thyroid. Many people have positive TPO antibodies for years with normal thyroid levels. Over time some develop hypothyroidism.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on TSH, free T4 and thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies. An ultrasound may show a typical pattern. If your thyroid levels are normal, regular checks may be all you need.
Treatment
When the thyroid becomes underactive, levothyroxine replaces the missing hormone. There is no proven diet that cures Hashimoto's. A gluten-free diet helps people who also have celiac disease, which is more common with Hashimoto's. Selenium and other supplements have limited evidence and should be discussed first.
